Three-dimensional nonlinear regularized inversion of the induced polarization data based on the Cole-Cole model

چکیده
The quantitative interpretation of induced polarization (IP) data in a complex three-dimensional (3D) environment is a very challenging problem . The analysis of IP phenomena is usually based on models with frequency dependent conductivity distri butions . In this paper, we develop a technique for 3D nonlinear inversion of IP data based on the Cole-Cole relaxation model. Our method takes into account, though in an approximate way, the nonlinearity of electromagnetic induction and IP phenom ena, and inverts the observed data for the Cole-Cole model paramet ers. The solution of the 3D IP inverse problem is based on both smooth and focusing regularized inversion , which helps to generate more reliable images of the subsurface structures. The method is tested on synthetic models with anomalous conductivity and intrinsic chargeability, and is also applied to a practical 3D IP survey. We demon strate that both the electrical conductivity and the chargeability distributions, as well as the other pa rameters of the Cole-Cole model , can be recovered from the observed IP data simultaneously. The recovered parameters of the Cole-Cole model can be used for the discrimination of the different types of minerali zation , which is an important goal in mineral exploration. © 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Bayesian inference of the Cole–Cole parameters from time- and frequency-domain induced polarization
The inversion of induced-polarization parameters is important in the characterization of the frequency electrical response of porous rocks. A Bayesian approach is developed to invert these parameters assuming the electrical response is described by a Cole–Cole model in the time or frequency domain. We show that the Bayesian approach provides a better analysis of the uncertainty associated with ...
متن کاملcomparison between Gauss-Newton and Markov-chain onte Carlo–based methods for inverting spectral nduced-polarization data for Cole-Cole parameters
We have developed a Bayesian model to invert spectral induced-polarization SIP data for Cole-Cole parameters using Markov-chain Monte Carlo MCMC sampling methods. We compared the performance of the MCMC-based stochastic method with an iterative Gauss-Newton-based deterministic method for Cole-Cole parameter estimation through inversion of synthetic and laboratory SIP data. The Gauss-Newton-base...
متن کاملCR1Dinv: A Matlab program to invert 1D spectral induced polarization data for the Cole-Cole model including electromagnetic effects
An inversion code has been constructed using Matlab, to recover 1D parameters of the Cole–Cole model from spectral induced polarization data. In a spectral induced polarization survey, impedances are recorded at various frequencies. Both induced polarization and electromagnetic coupling effects occur simultaneously over the experimental frequency bandwidth, and these become progressively more d...

A constrained nonlinear optimization method based on nonlinear programming techniques has been applied to map geometry of bedrock of sedimentary basins by inversion of gravity anomaly data. In the inversion, the applying model is a 2-D model that is composed of a set of juxtaposed prisms whose lower depths have been considered as unknown model parameters. The applied inversion method is a nonli...

Magnetotelluric measurements have been conducted in the period range of 0.005-128 s along five parallel east-west directed profiles including 85 sites totally in the north-eastern part of Gorgan Plain, Golestan Province, North of Iran; with the aim of exploring iodine. Distortion and dimensionality analysis of data imply the existence of a north-south elongated two-dimensional model with some l...
